When the family uploads a video of Ernest to YouTube, he becomes an internet sensation, catching the attention of the CIA and a paranormal scientist, Dr. Leslie Monroe, played by Tig Notaro. With the help of Kevin and his friend Joy, the two outcast teenagers, the family tries to uncover who Ernest was and how he died.
The film successfully combines comedy and horror elements in a family-friendly way.
