Dunki Movie Review 2023:

When we discuss movies on The Deshbhakt, some of you express disappointment, urging us to focus on topics like the country, politics, democracy, and recent events in the parliament. However, it’s essential to acknowledge that movies play a significant role in reflecting societal conditions.

The success or failure of films mirrors the state of our society. It can depict whether society needs a revolution or is leaning towards a different direction. For instance, would the angry young man image of Amitabh Bachchan be deemed anti-national? Would ‘Rang De Basanti’ face treason charges? Was ‘PK’ banned?

If we reflect on these questions honestly, the answers might surprise us. Now, let’s consider a few movies—’Kathal,’ ‘Bheed,’ ‘Afwaah,’ ‘Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai,’ and ‘Joram.’ How many of these have you seen? Not many, right?

These movies delve into our country’s social realities—covering politics, police, COVID lockdown, fake news, courts, Godmen, and tribal issues. Unfortunately, these films were overlooked by the public in 2023.

Speaking of acting, ‘Joram’ stands out as the best film of the year, with Manoj Bajpai deserving a national award for his performance. Yet, many may wonder, ‘What is Joram?’

However, if I criticize films like ‘Kerala Story’ and ‘Animal,’ reactions are likely different. This brings me to the point—I wanted to ask SRK and Rajkumar Hirani, while watching ‘Dunki,’ how dare you make a film that resonates with the sentiments of the 1990s? In 2023, people crave action like ‘Pathaan,’ ‘Jawan,’ and ‘Tiger 3,’ or themes of nationalism and masculinity seen in ‘Kerala Story,’ ‘Gadar 2,’ and ‘Animal.’

‘Dunki’ follows the typical Rajkumar Hirani style, maintaining his directorial sensibilities seen in ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai,’ ‘PK,’ ‘3 Idiots,’ and ‘Sanju.’ These films blend entertainment with education, requiring audiences to think and feel.

SRK, after action-packed films like ‘Pathaan’ and ‘Jawan,’ returns to his usual role in ‘Dunki’—a film that may struggle at the domestic box office due to its serious subject matter.

‘Dunki’ explores the strong desire to go abroad from India, particularly from Punjab, as a means of achieving status and wealth. The film addresses the various illegal methods people resort to for obtaining a visa. When SRK’s character fails to secure a visa, he decides to take his friends to London through a perilous route known as the ‘donkey route.’

Upon reaching London, the movie takes a turn, revealing truths about why foreign countries allow such migration and the exploitative conditions migrants face. While the film has educational aspects, it tends to get preachy at times, possibly challenging the preferences of today’s audience.

NRIs may appreciate the film for its portrayal of the feeling of homelessness. However, the film’s lengthy storyline and a somewhat disjointed narrative might be challenging for audiences. The movie carries a social message but may lack appeal due to its preachiness.

Despite its flaws, ‘Dunki’ features beautiful music, emotional scenes, outstanding performances by Vicky Kaushal, and decent chemistry between Tapsee and SRK. The film’s topic selection deserves commendation, addressing mature and sensitive themes without indulging in the blame game.

While ‘Dunki’ may not achieve the same success as ‘Pathaan’ or ‘Jawan,’ it provides lighthearted family entertainment for those with decent cinema expectations. SRK and Rajkumar Hirani have displayed courage in presenting a mature topic without compromising their filmmaking styles, even if it doesn’t cater to mass appeal.”
