The film follows Jaime Reyes, a teenager who discovers a scarab that grants him the ability to transform into a Blue Beetle. Jaime must use his new powers to protect his community from a new threat.

The film is set in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), and it is the first film in the DCEU to feature a Latino lead character. The film is rated PG-13 for action, violence, and some language.

Plot Summary:

After graduating from college, Jaime Reyes returns home with high hopes for his future, only to discover that things are not as he left them. As he searches for his purpose in the world, fate takes an unexpected turn when Jaime becomes the host of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology, known as the Scarab. The Scarab chooses Jaime as its symbiotic host, granting him an incredible suit of armor with extraordinary and unpredictable powers. This transformation leads him to become the superhero Blue Beetle.

Blue Beetle – Movie Review:

“Blue Beetle,” even though it was produced prior to James Gunn’s extensive reboot, is positioned within James Gunn’s DC Universe transition. It’s somewhat clever to acknowledge this, as proclaiming the arrival of a new film might seem insignificant if it’s about to undergo a reboot. Such announcements can dissuade audiences from watching the movie since they know a reboot is imminent. In this sense, DC seems to be learning from past mistakes, which is commendable.

“Blue Beetle” is a fresh addition to the DC movie lineup, featuring a character I’m not very familiar with outside of Injustice 2. I must admit that I don’t know much about this character. The basic premise is that a robotic, world-ending death Scarab from outer space attaches itself to an individual, transforming him into Blue Beetle, a superhero who’s tasked with saving the day. A notable aspect is the family dynamic in the film, and Xolo Maridueña, known for his role in Cobra Kai, takes on the lead role of Blue Beetle. He brings the same heart and soul to this film as he does to the show, and it’s easy to root for him.

Maridueña’s character, while seemingly young, exudes a relatable and genuine energy that resonates well, especially in a film centered on family dynamics. The film effectively blends seriousness and lightheartedness, although it occasionally struggles with tonal consistency. There are moments that hint at a more intense film, only to be followed by shifts in music and tone, seemingly aimed at making the film more accessible to a younger audience.

The transformation scene, initially intense, can be jarring when juxtaposed with humorous song choices. While humor is appreciated, the timing and execution could use improvement. The film makes good use of seasoned comedians like George Lopez, who brings their comedic expertise to the production.

It’s worth noting that the family aspect stands out as the heart of the movie. There’s a certain irony in seeing a strong granny character wielding a Gatling gun, delivering both campy and amusing moments. However, the film occasionally lingers too long on such scenes.

As for the antagonists, Susan Sarandon plays a passive-aggressive CEO character, adding an interesting dynamic to the film. Another character, resembling a figure from Cyberpunk 2077, starts off intriguing but loses appeal during the action sequences. The film borrows elements from various comic book movies, resulting in a mixed feeling of familiarity and a desire for originality.

While the movie generally plays it safe within the superhero genre, there are a few standout dramatic moments that demonstrate its potential for emotional depth. In a world where many superhero films attempt to balance humor and drama, seasoned comedians often excel in striking the right balance. The drama scenes hold their own and add layers to the characters.

Overall, the family dynamic, the likability of the lead actor, and a few dramatic moments make “Blue Beetle” an enjoyable film. However, it struggles to stand out amidst the plethora of superhero movies, incorporating familiar elements from other films within the genre. A more distinctive approach might have elevated its impact. Nonetheless, it has its entertaining moments and could provide a fun experience, especially for those who enjoy a mix of humor and action in their superhero films.
